When my husband and I relocated further south, we purchased a home that required some upgrades. We were able to afford a property on a lake because of all the necessary repairs. One of our concerns was the age of the packaged heating and cooling unit. We had no way of knowing how old it was but the unit was enormous and rusted. It made so much noise whenever it started up that it often startled me. However, the system managed to keep the home perfectly cool during the especially long, hot and humid summers. Although the winters in our new location are typically quite mild, we can see temperatures in the low forties from time to time. The packaged unit struggled a bit on particularly cold nights. My husband and I planned to replace the heating/cooling system but other projects took precedence. Since the system continued to operate, we weren’t in a huge hurry. About three years after we bought the house, I noticed warm air coming from the vents when the system was set to cooling mode. I checked the thermostat and changed the air filter, but there was definitely something wrong with the unit. I had a friend offer me an air conditioning repair, fully expecting to be told that the heating/cooling equipment would need to be replaced. My friend found a small refrigerant leak. While the system was too old to find any new parts for it, he added refrigerant and got it cooling again. I was told that the air conditioning unit would run perfectly for two hours or two years. It lasted one year and then warm air once again was pouring from the vents. At that point, I was unwilling to spend another couple hundred dollars on such an old heating/cooling system. In the future I will trust my air conditioning repair to a professional company!
