Add HVAC System Service to your Fall To-Do List

Ah, fall! The beautiful, cool breezes, the crinkle of leaves under your feet, the smell of pumpkin-themed desserts: what’s not to love? Just like every other change in season, the onset of fall requires paying attention to your seasonal to-do list.

My to-do list includes things like cleaning out the gutters, gathering up non-perishables in the event of an ice storm when winter comes, and decorating my house for fall holidays.

But—and I say this with zero hesitation—the most important item on my fall to-do list is having my heating system serviced. Whether your home has a furnace, a baseboard heating system, a heat pump system, or even those fancy heated floors, you want to make sure all of your HVAC equipment is in working order before the autumn chill kicks in. I made the mistake of skipping this item a few years ago; I thought, “My heating system worked just fine last year, I don’t need to call out an HVAC technician for no reason.” Boy, was I wrong. On the first night of the season that I needed my heater, I was stunned to find that cold air was coming out of the vents, as if the air conditioning was running—everyone in my home used space heaters to compensate, and we ended up blowing a fuse! I’ll never make that mistake again. So, every fall, I have my trusted local HVAC company send a technician out to examine and test my heating system, and make any necessary repairs to my furnace. They almost always provide me with a new tip for achieving efficiency during the cold months, so I always benefit from an HVAC technician stopping by for a visit. Take my word for it: You don’t want to be stuck without a working heating system this winter. So, add annual heating system service to your fall to-do list!
