My Roommates and I Fought Over The HVAC System

When I was in college, I was lucky enough to get accepted into a luxury dormitory.

I was one of three roommates, but we each got our own bedroom and there was a common living room, kitchen, and bathroom.

Most of my friends who attended the same university were stuck in a traditional dorm that was the size of my personal bedroom. They also had to share a bathroom with an entire floor of people. There were a lot of benefits to staying in that luxury dormitory, but the one negative was that everyone in the room had to share the thermostat settings. There was one thermostat that controlled the entire dorm and each of us had a different temperature preference. I liked to sleep in a cooler environment, but one of the other girls liked to sleep with the heat on. The third roommate liked to sleep in a lukewarm temperature, so she didn’t prefer either of our temperature settings. During the day, I thought it made sense to keep the thermostat set to 72 degrees, because there was no sense in cooling a dorm that nobody was in. We were all away at class anyway. Each of us would alter the temperature settings whenever the other two roommates weren’t around. The furnace and air conditioner were constantly being turned on and off and nobody was ever really comfortable while they slept. I’m thankful I didn’t have to pay for that utility bill, because I’m sure it was outrageous.
