Air conditioning is a necessity.

Air conditioning is a necessity.

I would have sweat rolling down my back and face, which would leave me feeling dirty and unable to work

I have had people argue with me when I tell them air conditioning is a necessity. My sister insists air conditioning is a convenience that has made people soft. No one wants to be out in the sun anymore, where they can soak up the natural Vitamin D it provides. She was so angry that I said it was a necessity, she went into a speech telling me that if it weren’t for air conditioning and other modern conveniences, we wouldn’t have nearly as much garbage in the landfill. The air wouldn’t be full of harmful gasses that would kill us all. She added that it was my modern conveniences that made me the worst one in our family. She took my hair spray off my bathroom counter, and threw it in the trash. She grabbed my laptop and I was waiting for her to put it in the trash. She told me it was also one of those conveniences that add to the landfill. I grabbed her cell phone and asked if it was also a convenience? She told me her phone was a necessity because it was her tie to work. I worked from home, and I needed to do so in comfort. Without my air conditioning, I couldn’t concentrate. I would have sweat rolling down my back and face, which would leave me feeling dirty and unable to work. I couldn’t pay for her clothing or other fun stuff. She relented and said air conditioning may be a necessity for me, but not for everyone. I knew she didn’t want to go without her phone, food, or clothing, and she would just shut up eventually.
