As an HVAC technician I can’t stress enough the importance of this. Each year we have at least one emergency call out in the middle of the night to repair a failed system. I remember last year when we were called to a home to repair their gas fireplace that they had installed due to a gas leak. It was the end of October and our area was experiencing its first cold snap. The family did not want to turn on the furnace so they decided to light the pilot on the gas fireplace instead. It is important to have these types of heating devices checked or serviced at times too. In the case of that family damage had been caused during some other repairs that they had done. When they decided to take the chill off the house and ended up calling emergency services to clear the house of gas and then calling us to repair the leak.
